FSC-Certified Packaging: What Brands Can and Cannot Claim

FSC certification is often requested for paper and board packaging, but the material, paperwork and printed label must align. Buying paper that originated from a certified source does not automatically allow any business to place the FSC trademarks on a box.

What FSC certification covers

The Forest Stewardship Council system supports responsible forest management and traceability through the supply chain. Chain-of-custody certification allows certified organisations to control and pass on eligible FSC claims.

Common material claims include FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled. The appropriate claim depends on the certified inputs and the supplier’s chain-of-custody system.

Use a certified packaging supplier

FSC guidance states that packaging can carry an FSC label when it is produced and labelled under a valid chain-of-custody certificate. The certified organisation controls the approved label and records.

Ask for the supplier’s certificate code and verify its status in the FSC public database. Specify certified material at the quotation stage; requesting a logo after production has started can be too late.

Avoid unsupported text claims

Text such as “made from FSC-certified board” cannot simply be added as a substitute for the approved on-product label. Trademark use has specific rules, and promotional statements may require authorisation.

The FSC packaging guidance explains how certified suppliers, labels and claims work. Keep approved artwork and sales documents with the project records.

Separate fibre sourcing from recyclability

FSC certification addresses forest sourcing and chain of custody. It does not by itself prove that a completed package is recyclable in every market.

Laminations, windows, adhesives, coatings and inserts can affect end-of-life performance. Review sourcing and recyclability as related but distinct parts of the specification.

Build certification into the design process

Reserve space for the correct label, confirm minimum size and contrast, and avoid placing it across folds or areas affected by finishing. Ask the certified supplier to provide the approved artwork.

For custom cartons, paper bags and paper-wrapped rigid boxes, document which components are included in the certified claim.

Questions to ask

Confirm whether the final packaging supplier is certified, which claim will appear on invoices, which label can be used, who approves artwork and whether every paper-based component is covered.

A clear answer at the start prevents misleading claims and costly artwork revisions later.

Final considerations

Responsible sourcing communication should be specific and verifiable. Certification works best when procurement, design, marketing and the certified packaging supplier agree on the claim before artwork approval.
